The George Lockhart Rives residence designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1908 on East 79th Street in New York City. Rives was United States Assistant Secretary of State from 1887 to 1889. Perfectly respectable townhouse, but take the google street view (which BTW is a great feature to haved linked here, thnx Zack) one block east, between Madison Ave. and 5th Ave. and that particular stretch of 79th Street retains scores of lovely townhouses and ends with the wonderfully exuberant gothic fantasy, known as the Isaac Fletcher mansion at 5th Ave. and 79th Street by none other than CPH Gilbert.
This house is elegance itself.
And if one wants to see exuberant gothic fantasy, may I refer you to the house that started it all and was never topped, the lost William K. Vanderbilt House by Richard Morris Hunt, and its next door companion for WKV Jr. by McKim, Mead & White. Just sayin'.
I find this house an elegant design.
Ahhhh the Vanderbilts. They knew how to build grandly and you collectively can include the Cornelius Vanderbilt II mansion at 57th Street & 5th and Charles Schwab's magnificent home on Riverside Drive to the exuberant fantasy list too, but sadly for all of us they are long gone. (sigh) I would even include the Senator Clark's towering mansion on 5th Ave on my list of extravagant fantasy homes that I would have loved to have seen in person and which I believe has been unfairly criticized by contemporary historians because of the unlikeability of the owner moreso than for the design. I need a ride on a time machine.
