The Ely School for Girls designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1907 in Greenwich, Connecticut. The preparatory school moved from New York City to Greenwich the year the building was completed. The school burned down in 1926.

How interesting....I never knew that school existed in Greenwich...it looks like it was huge.

ReplyDeleteOn another website (http://greenwich.patch.com/articles/ebay-saturday-a-bit-of-scholastic-history-in-greenwich#comment_5704576) someone said it was out on North St., between Ivanhoe Lane and Hawkwood Lane; someone else mentioned that the carriage house and some foundations still remain. That's out across from St. Mary Cemetery. Looks like anything there would now be on someone's private property. I did a Google search since I just ran across some photos of the school in an architectural magazine from 1909.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother, Katherine Roberts, attended that school. She started in NYC then it moved to Greenwich. This was c.1900. I wonder if any records survived the fire in 1926. If anyone finds out can you please email me? [rmpope@rcn.com]. I'd love to find out some more on her but I'm guessing all the records burned too. Thanks.
