Michigan Central Station designed by Reed & Stem and Warren & Wetmore c. 1912 in Detroit, Michigan. The station slowly fell out of use following WWII until it was purchased by Amtrak in 1971 which undertook restoration work on the waiting area in 1978. In 1988 the facility was closed completely and has sat vacant and decaying since. Click HERE for more and HERE to see the station on google street view. Sure speaks volumes about the city of Detroit and our wholesale abandonment of formerly vibrant urban downtowns. The city has a plethera of abandoned, decaying and forlorn structures. "We will probably not be judged by the monuments we build but by those we destroy"
I think there are plans for some sort of restoration (which have been around forever) but in my humble opinion it would be far more interesting if the building were stabilized and kept in ruins.
And allowed for people to explore it.
What a depressing way to start the morning. Such real magnificence,and such horrible decay. We really have not become better as a society.
