Lipstick on a Pig. One of the most awkwardly magnificent, and most magnificently awkward estates ever built in America. Very entertaining, but oh so vulgar.
I meant to add that this place really is the exact spiritual and aesthetic ancestor of all the new palaces, with their acres of gilt, awkward bronze & marble staircases, their embarrassing statuary---something a Saudi prince might conceive, if Saudi princes were inclined to build on pine barrens in New Jersey
Its different definitely. I don't think Mr Price was that incline to creating magnificent cold interiors like the others. But its very reminiscent of Stanford White's dazzling Italian spaces in Manhattan
I toured the mansion in the mid-1960s . . . that staircase, in the Great Hall, IS marble, as well as the facing of the balconies between the tall columns ~ the columns, themselves, were imitation marble. At some point the wrought iron railings had been gold leafed, and were dazzling !!! Fitted red velvet covered the hand rails.
