'Fox Hollow'

'Fox Hollow', the Tracy Dows estate designed by Harrie Lindeberg c. 1909 in Rhinebeck, New York. Dows was owner of the Beekman Arms Hotel in Rhinebeck and his NYTimes obituary called him "one of Dutchess county's most prominent citizens."  A large portion was devoted to the description of 'Fox Hollow' which consisted of over 700 acres, had a working farm and sat in a region "known as one of the most beautiful sections of the county."  Dows died in London at the age of 65 in 1937.  Click HERE to see 'Fox Hollow' on bing.

'Mondanne'

'Mondanne', the James A. Stillman estate designed by Albro & Lindeberg c. 1910 in Pocantico Hills, New York.  Stillman was Chairman of the Board of the National City Bank.  'Mondanne' sat on over 400 acres and adjoined 'Kykuit', the John D. Rockefeller estate.  Stillman's sister Sarah was married to William G. Rockefeller and sister Isabel was married to Percy A. Rockefeller.  In 1929 Stillman's yacht, Wenonah II, exploded and burned in Glen Cove, Long Island.  Three years later 'Mondanne' suffered a fire that destroyed the entire house.

** To complete the trifecta, in 1926 Stillman's New York City residence at 9 West 52nd Street suffered a fire on the top floor which caused extensive water damage throughout the house.  And to add insult to injury, before the fires at his city and country residences and yacht, his brother was made an honorary fire chief (Dr. Ernest G. Stillman).  Photos from Architecture, 1912.

'Shadow Brook Farm'

'Shadow Brook Farm', the Dr. Ernest Fahnestock estate designed by Harrie T. Lindeberg c. 1909 in Shrewsbury, New Jersey. Fahnestock was an honorary police surgeon and doctor. He shot himself in the head at the age of 60 in his Manhattan townhouse at 954 Fifth Avenue in 1937 (though his death was listed as accidental it sure seems like a suicide). The Manhattan townhouse was razed later that year and replaced with a Rosario Candela apartment building (955 Fifth). Today 'Shadow Brook Farm' operates as 'Shadowbrook', a wedding/banquet hall.
