The 'Victory Arch'

The 'Victory Arch', built by Mayor John F. Hylan and designed by Thomas Hastings c. 1919 at Fifth Avenue and 24th Street in New York City to commemorate the city's soldiers and war dead.  Click HERE for a 1919 NYTimes article on the arch's conception.  The arch was constructed of wood and plaster with the intention of eventually being replaced by a permanent structure which never happened.  The 'Victory Arch' was eventually demolished.

The Elihu Root Residence

The Elihu Root residence designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1904 at 733 Park Avenue in New York City.  Root, an attorney, served as the Secretary of War from 1899-1904, the Secretary of State from 1905-1909 and U.S. Senator from New York from 1909-1915.  The residence was demolished c. 1970 and replaced with a 30-story apartment building.  Photo from Architecture, 1905.

The Henry Clay Frick Residence

The William Starr Miller Residence

The William Starr Miller residence designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1914 at 1048 Fifth Avenue and East 86th Street in New York City.  Miller operated real estate and his death notice in the NYTimes is unusually small, merely stating that he was a member of the Knickerbocker and Union Clubs and a graduate of Harvard.  Today the house operates as the Nueu Galerie, click HERE to see the residence on google street view.  Photo from the Museum of the City of New York.

'Whitehall'

 'Whitehall', the Henry Morrison Flagler estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1900 in Palm Beach, Florida.  Flager, a founder of Standard Oil, would go on to be influential in the development of the Miami and Palm Beach areas building railroads and hotels such as the Ponce de Leon Hotel, the Royal Poinciana Hotel and the Breakers Hotel.  Since 1959 'Whitehall' has been open to the public as a museum, click HERE for more on the museum and HERE for a biography of Flagler.  Click HERE to see 'Whitehall' on google earth and HERE on bing.

'Bellefontaine'

 'Bellefontaine', the Giraud Foster estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1897 in Lenox, Massachusetts.  Foster was the grandson of Andrew Foster, founder of Foster & Giraud, one of New York City's leading merchants in the second half of the 19th century.  Foster's sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard Gambrill, hired Carrere & Hastings to design her 'Vernon Court' in Newport, Rhode Island during the same time the firm was busy with 'Bellefontaine'.  Foster died at the house in 1945 at the age of 94.  Click HERE for more on 'Bellefontaine'.  Today the estate operates as a Canyon Ranch Spa, click HERE to see 'Bellefontaine' on google earth and HERE on bing.

The Black, Starr & Frost Building

The Black, Starr & Frost Building designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1912 at 592 Fifth Avenue (and 48th Street) in New York City. Black, Starr & Frost, jewelers, erected their new headquarters on the site of the former C.T. Cook residence, click HERE for more. The building underwent significant alterations in 1964.

The C. Ledyard Blair Residence

The C. Ledyard Blair residence designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1917 at 2 East 70th Street in New York City.
