The New York Yacht Club

The New York Yacht Club designed by Warren & Wetmore c. 1899 at 37 West 44th Street in New York City. Founded in 1844, members of the club spent much of their time racing yachts for prize money. This eventually gave way to the 'America's Cup Race', named after the America, a schooner owned by a number of NYYC members which won the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1851. The trophy was transferred to the club and became the prize for the America's Cup regatta. The New York Yacht Club held the trophy for 132 years until defeat in 1983 lost the cup to Australia. Click HERE for more on the New York Yacht Club and HERE to read Christopher Gray's Streetscapes article on the building. Click HERE to see the New York Yacht Club on google street view. In my humble opinion this is one of the coolest buildings in the city (even though I've never been inside).

The American Geographical Society

The American Geographical Society Building designed by Howells & Stokes c. 1901 on West 81st Street in New York City. For whatever reason the AGS never seemed able to settle on a location, constantly moving around NYC until 1911 when they moved to Audubon Terrace. They are currently located in Brooklyn. Click HERE for more on the American Geographical Society. The building was demolished in the late 1920s and replaced with an Emery Roth designed apartment building.
