Aeolian Hall

Aeolian Hall at the Aeolian Building designed by Warren & Wetmore c. 1912 at 33 West 42nd Street in New York City.  The building housed the Aeolian Company, manufacturer of pianos and organs, and the hall was built to seat 1,100 people and hosted a variety of concerts.  Aeolian sold the building to the Schulte Cigar Stores Company in 1924 and hired Warren & Wetmore to design a new headquarters at 689 Fifth Avenue which was completed in 1927.  This building is now home to the State University College of Optometry.  Click HERE for more on Aeolian Hall and HERE for Christopher Gray's Streetscapes column on the building.  Click HERE to see the building on google streetview.

Madison Square Garden

The second Madison Square Garden designed by Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White c. 1890 at Madison Avenue and East 26th Street in New York City.  White kept an apartment in the Garden and the rooftop restaurant was the site of his murder by Harry K. The Selwyn Theatre

 The Selwyn Theatre built for Archie and Edgar Selwyn by George Keister c. 1918 at 227 West 42nd Street in New York City.  The theatre eventually fell into disrepair and was taken by the City and State in 1990.  In 1997 the Roundabout Theatre Company began a renovation and the updated theatre was reopened as the American Airlines Theatre in 2000.  Click HERE to see what the Selwyn Theatre looks like today on google earth.

The Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre designed by Thomas W. Lamb c. 1919 at 1645 Broadway in New York City. The movie house was acquired by Marcus Loew in 1924 and became the flagship Loew's Theatre. The final premiere (among many) the theatre hosted was Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey in April 1968 (click HERE for video of the opening). The theatre closed in September of that year to be demolished and replaced with the Paramount Plaza building.

The Audubon Theatre

The Audubon Theatre designed by Thomas W. Lamb c. 1912 at Broadway and 165th Street in New York City. The ballroom at the theatre was the site of the assassination of Malcolm X on February 21, 1965. The New York Hippodrome

The New York Hippodrome or Hippodrome Theatre designed by Frederic Thompson and Elmer Dundy c. 1905 on Sixth Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets in New York City. Click HERE for more on the Hippodrome which was unfortunately demolished in 1939.
