William Pitkin Jr. Newberry was a businessman, Secretary of the Navy (1908-1909) and U.S. Senator from Michigan (1919-1922). In 1921 he was convicted under the
Federal Corrupt Policies Act though the conviction was later overturned by the Supreme Court. He was offered to return to the Senate but ultimately resigned. '
Drybrook' was listed No. 8 on Henry Saylor's
Twelve Best Country Houses in America from
Country Life, 1916. The home has since been demolished.
